About PuTTY
PuTTY is a free program for Windows that allows users to access their accounts on servers using secure shell (SSH).
It provides essentially the same functionality as Telnet, allowing users to run commands from the command prompt.
PuTTY runs only on Windows. Mac OS X users can use the built-in ssh program from the Terminal window.
Downloading and Installing PuTTY
PuTTY is easier to install than just about any other program because it
consists of only a single file. We recommend that you put the file
on your desktop and run the program from there.
- Click here to download PuTTY.
- Save the file to your Desktop.
Using PuTTY to access MyWeb
Once PuTTY is downloaded to your Desktop, double-click on the PuTTY icon and follow these instructions:

The first screen is the PuTTY Configuration screen. Enter myweb.csuchico.edu for the Host Name and make sure that
the other values circled in red match what you have.
-
Next, click on Keyboard and change the Backspace Key option to Control-H,
as shown in red below.
-
Now click Open. The first time you do this, you will see a PuTTY Security Alert.
This is normal. Click Yes to continue.

-
Next to login as:, type your Portal username and press Enter. You will then be prompted for your password. Type
your Portal password and press enter.
-
When you have successfully logged in, a command prompt will appear. From here, you can execute UNIX commands.
