The above image superimposes the sketch from Darwin's notebook depicting his first musings regarding the branching pattern of speciation onto Chico's famed Hooker Oak, named after the 19th century botanist, Sir Joseph Dalton Hooker, who was a friend and confidant of Charles Darwin.  Hooker visited the tree during a visit to Chico at the invitation of John Bidwell, Chico's founder and first philanthropist.
