Experience and References

It is not easy to show-off my copy editing skills on a website (I just hope there are no misspellings). Writers can show samples of their work. I cannot, because it is other people's work. I did however, get the highest grade in my copy editing class last semester. My professor actually told me it was the highest grade she had ever seen in that class. She is listed as a reference below.

Aside from my forthcoming journalism degree from Chico State, I am spending this semester as a news copy editor for the award-winning school newspaper, The Orion. It has been a good learning experience. I received an excellent evaluation from my supervisor, Olga Munoz, chief copy editor, who has also agreed to be a reference for me.

I have also included my ex-employer on the list of references, because, as I explain below, I worked for her for a long time and she has the best idea of what kind of employee I am.

Although I want to be an editor, a story I wrote was published in the Chico News & Review in November of 2006 as part of a cover story on local authors. It is about a man named Ali Ataman who manages Chuck E Cheese's and had a book published. Here is the story, titled World-wise Dream Realized, it is the second one down.

I am sure by now it obvious that I am not full of experience. But I believe I have the potential to be a very good editor. I also have more work experience than most people coming out of college. I worked at a local deli and caterer, Port of Subs for seven years. I ended up managing the place, and was pretty much in charge of everything. Perhaps this doesn't translate to a copy editing job very obviously, but I feel it shows I have a very strong work ethic, stay at once place of employment for a long time, and that have been quite trusted to run a business.

After Port of Subs closed up shop I started working at Sierra Nevada Brewery. I still work there, in the restaurant. Another food service job, but trying to keep customers happy in the busiest restaurant I have ever seen has made me able to handle stress.

Both of these food service jobs have taught me about managing time and being calm under pressure. I think these attributes carry over well into the newspaper business.
